Software Engineer, Linux Kernel Platform, Augmented Reality

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 5 years of experience working with embedded operating systems.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional or cross-business projects.
  • Experience with hardware and software video codecs, media containers and GStreamer, V4L2, and mobile GPU acceleration.
  • Knowledge of Linux memory system, Linux debug, Linux storage, and advanced Linux kernel drivers, including high speed interfaces and accelerators.

About the job

As a Software Engineer for Linux Kernel Platform, you will work in a combined hardware and software team to create generational platform hardware/software and thoroughly verify its robustness. You will work with sister teams and third-party partners to evaluate and down-select compelling new devices and technologies and create prototypes of these for testing and demonstration.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $185,000-$283,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.   • Work in a combined hardware/software platform team to vet new platform hardware by bringing up Linux-based software to run its systems.
  • Implement device drivers to evaluate new devices and technologies. Build compelling prototypes and demos for testing and share out.
  • Create new and utilize existing benchmark tools to assess power/performance of mobile SoCs and microcontrollers.
  • Develop and maintain software tools enabling other engineers to troubleshoot and/or optimize Google AR/VR hardware products. Work with hardware engineers to realize fixtures/solutions that can achieve the test goals.
  • Collaborate with other teams across Google to leverage existing or potential synergies, making sure Google AR/VR’s short term and long term needs are best met while reducing effort redundancy.
